Hi! We’re Daniel and Stephanie, parents of four kids, longtime homeschoolers, and the family behind Outside the Expected.

Years ago, when our oldest was still little, we made the decision to homeschool. At the time, we thought we were making a choice about education. We had no idea how much that one decision would eventually shape the way we thought about family, time, learning, opportunity, and what really matters to us.

Today, that little boy is in college, we’re still homeschooling, and four very different kids have taught us that there really is no single roadmap for raising or educating a child.

And we wouldn’t want there to be.

I’m Stephanie, a former special education teacher, homeschool mom, and educator.

My background in special education taught me early on that children don’t all learn in the same way, at the same pace, or on the same timeline. But homeschooling our own children took that understanding far beyond anything I learned professionally.

One of our daughters has special needs and communicates differently, and she has challenged me to think more deeply about what learning, progress, independence, and success actually mean.

Sometimes a child is ready to race ahead. Sometimes they need more time. Sometimes the curriculum needs to change. And sometimes what a child needs most doesn’t come from a curriculum at all.

Over the years, that has become one of the beliefs at the heart of our family:

Not the grade printed on the curriculum box. Not someone else’s timeline. Not someone else’s definition of success.

I want to help parents understand their children, find good resources, make confident decisions, and give themselves permission to adjust when something isn’t working.

Because you don’t have to recreate school at home to give your child an incredible education.

I’m Daniel, a homeschool dad, professional photographer, business owner, storyteller, and the guy behind the camera for much of what you see around here.

While Stephanie brings years of professional experience in education, I tend to see learning through experiences.

I believe there’s enormous value in getting out into the world with our kids and letting them see, touch, explore, question, and experience things for themselves.

That might mean standing in a national park, wandering through a museum, discovering an unexpected place on a road trip, working on a project at home, taking care of animals, or having one of those conversations in the car that somehow becomes more memorable than anything we planned to teach that day.

As a photographer, I’ve spent much of my career telling stories through images. As a dad, I’ve realized that some of the stories I care about most are the ones unfolding right in front of me.

Homeschooling has given our family something I value tremendously:

time together.

Not unlimited time. Not perfect time. And certainly not always peaceful time with four kids. 😂

But time to know our children, experience things together, make memories, and occasionally take the interesting-looking exit instead of driving past it.

That love of exploration is also what led to Adventure Outside the Expected, where we share the places our family visits and the things we discover along the way.

If raising four children has taught us anything, it’s that what works wonderfully for one child can fall completely flat with another.

Our kids have different strengths, challenges, interests, personalities, and needs.

That has shaped more than the curriculum we choose.

It has changed the way we think about parenting.

We’ve learned to worry less about whether our family looks like everyone else’s and ask a better question:

Sometimes the answer is academic.

Sometimes it’s an opportunity to become more independent.

Sometimes it’s encouragement.

Sometimes it’s a challenge.

Sometimes it’s simply more time.

And figuring that out is an ongoing process. We’re still learning too.

Eventually we realized that what we wanted to share was bigger than homeschooling.

It’s about raising kids intentionally.

It’s about recognizing that learning happens in kitchens and backyards, on road trips and hiking trails, in museums and national parks, through books and conversations, successes and mistakes.

It’s about giving children opportunities to grow into the people they were created to be.

And it’s about remembering that while there is plenty of wisdom to learn from other people, another family’s path doesn’t have to become yours.

That’s why we created Outside the Expected.

We’ll share our homeschool experience, practical resources, ideas for children who learn differently, everyday learning, family life, and some of the adventures we have along the way.

We certainly don’t have everything figured out.

But after years of homeschooling four very different kids, navigating special needs, watching our oldest head off to college, and building a life that often looks a little different from the expected one, there’s one thing we’ve become pretty confident about:

You can understand your children.

You can make intentional choices.

You can change course when something isn’t working.

And you can decide what matters most for your family.
