There is no single right way to raise, teach, or build a life with your children.
We’re Daniel and Stephanie, a homeschooling family learning to build education and family life around the children in front of us, not around someone else’s expectations.
Start with your child. Build from there.
Every family starts in a different place. Choose the path that sounds most like yours.
You’re curious, maybe excited, maybe completely overwhelmed.
We’ll help you understand the basics, make the first few decisions, and see what homeschooling can actually look like.
Maybe things are going well. Maybe something feels off.
Let’s talk curriculum, routines, grade levels, motivation, confidence, and how to build learning around your child.
Sometimes the usual approach simply doesn’t fit.
Explore practical ways to think about learning, communication, independence, accommodations, and progress when your child needs something different.

Hi, I’m Stephanie. I’m a former special education teacher, homeschool mom of four, and educator who has spent much of my life helping children learn in ways that work for who they actually are.
My husband and I chose to homeschool when our oldest was little. Today, that little boy is in college, and homeschooling has become much more than the way we educate our children. It has shaped the way we think about time, family, learning, and what really matters.
My background in special education taught me that children don’t all learn the same way. Raising and homeschooling our own children has made that lesson even more personal.
One of our daughters has special needs, and parenting her has challenged me to look beyond traditional expectations and think differently about learning, communication, independence, and success.
That’s at the heart of Outside the Expected.
If you’re considering homeschooling and have no idea what to do first, we’re creating a simple guide to help you take the first steps without drowning in information.
Inside, we’ll cover:
Sometimes it looks like reading a book.
Sometimes it looks like building a sailboat from craft supplies.
Sometimes it’s making applesauce, feeding chickens, visiting a museum, exploring a national park, or learning how to do something independently for the first time.
We believe everyday life is full of opportunities to learn.
Our family also believes some of the best learning happens when you leave home and go see the world for yourself.
National parks. Museums. Historic places. Roadside surprises. Places we never expected to love.
Follow our travel side at:
Real Places. Real Experiences. Real Memories.
Our family hasn’t always followed the standard script.
We homeschool.
We raise children with different strengths and different needs.
We travel.
We learn through ordinary life.
And over the years, we’ve learned that the question isn’t:
“What is everyone else doing?”
It’s:
That’s what Outside the Expected is about.
Start with the child in front of you.
Take the next step.
Adjust when you need to.
And build a family life that actually fits your family.
